Marblehead is home to some of the oldest residential structures in America. From the timber-framed homes of the 1600s to the elegant Federalist estates of the 18th century, the soul of these buildings lies in their historic stone foundations.
At Thompson Crowley Masonry Inc., we understand that preserving these foundations requires more than just modern masonry; it requires a deep respect for colonial construction, historical materials, and the unique coastal geology of the North Shore. We have restored 1000's of foundations over the past six decades since 1965.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Marblehead builders utilized what was locally available: glacial till, fieldstone, and granite. These stones were dry-laid or set with a traditional lime-based mortar.
Unlike modern Portland cement, historic lime mortar is "sacrificial"—it is designed to be softer than the stone and breathable, allowing moisture to wick through the joints rather than trapping it inside the wall.
Thompson Crowley Masonry specializes in these traditional materials, ensuring that your historic home remains structurally sound without the risks associated with modern, rigid cement
We don't use "one-size-fits-all" mortar. Our professional restoration involves analyzing the existing substrate to create a custom-blended natural hydraulic lime (NHL) or high-calcium lime putty mix. This ensures the new mortar is compatible with your original 18th or 19th-century stones, preventing the cracking and moisture-trapping common with modern Portland cements.
For many historic basements, the stone surfaces have become jagged or difficult to maintain. Our professional rendering services involve applying thin, breathable layers of specialized masonry coatings.

Our team meticulously removes failing, sandy mortar and replaces it with custom-blended lime mortars. These mixes match the color, texture, and structural needs of your home’s original era, restoring the necessary "flex" and breathability.

Old rubble foundations often develop internal cavities as mortar washes away over centuries. Thompson Crowley Masonry performs deep-pointing and internal consolidation to stabilize the core of the wall, preventing stones from shifting or bulging inward.

We excel at taking dark, crumbling basements and transforming them into clean, bright, and structurally sound useable spaces.
